There is little doubt that no one has devoted more time and dedication to the BC Hockey Benevolent Association and Canucks alumni than Ernie Dougherty. A charter member of the BCHBA at its inception in 1952, Ernie has celebrated more than 50 years of success within this flourishing group of hockey personalities. He turned pro with the Western League Canucks in their inaugural season (1945-46, then in the Eastern League and ultimately overseas for Nottingham in the British League. Upon retirement as a player, Ernie got into the ice cream business and still operates a concession at the annual PNE. Though he will be at least 82 by the time you read this, he shows few signs of slowing down. He is the longtime treasurer of the alumni association, a member of its board of directors and a charter member of the Jake Milford Golf Tournament committee, which dates back to 1984. In 1996, he received the prestigious Jake Milford Plaque for outstanding and lasting contributions to hockey in BC. Oh yes, and he is still the referee in virtually all alumni hockey games!
