Garry Monahan is the answer. The question? Who was the first player ever selected in the NHLs original amateur draft in 1963. Thats right. The Montreal Canadiens chose Monahan from the Peterborough Petes of the OHA, and Mondo turned pro with the Habs four years later (1967-68). He would play only 14 games for the Canadiens before brief stints in Detroit and Los Angeles in 1969-70. He then spent four seasons with the Leafs before landing in Vancouver on Oct. 16/74. He played four seasons with the Canucks, his best being 1976-77 when he scored 18 goals and 26 assists for 44 points. All told, he played 287 games for Vancouver with totals of 58-82-140 and he remains in 50th place in all-time team scoring. In 1979, he went overseas to play two seasons with the Seibu team in Japan. He now resides in West Vancouver where he is involved in real estate sales. He is a recent but very avid addition to the Canucks alumni team.
