He may be a relative newcomer with the alumni and he may have played for four other NHL teams, but local hockey fans have always considered Kirk McLean as a Vancouver Canuck and are delighted at his recent homecoming. Originally a draft pick of New Jersey, McLean played only six contests for the Devils before Canuck GM Pat Quinn engineered the deal which landed him for the next 11 seasons in Vancouver. During that span, McLean (in various seasons) led or shared the NHL lead in games played, minutes played, victories in a season (38 in 91-92), and shutouts (5 in 91-92). It all culminated with a brilliant performance in the 1994 playoffs when his spectacular netminding backstopped the Canucks all the way to a 7th game in the Cup final. In 1997-98, he was traded to Carolina, then Florida, and finally to a two-year stint with the Rangers, where he wrapped up his stellar career in 2000-01. He remains Canucks all-time career leader among goalies in virtually all netminding categories, including shutouts (20) and wins (211). He is now a regular analyst on Canucks Pay-Per-view telecasts and with the alumni hockey team, where he can now be found skating as a forward.
