We bet you Cliff Ronning wishes he had a dollar for every time hes been called too small in his long, illustrious career. Despite incredible numbers in junior hockey (how about 484 points in three seasons?), he was not picked until the 9th round (by St. Louis) in the 1984. And even after three seasons with the Blues, including a 24-31-55 campaign in 1988-89, Ronning felt he really had not made it and opted for a season with Asiago in Italy where hockey was fun again. Part way through the 90-91 season, Ronning found himself in the midst of a blockbuster seven-player trade which brought him to the Canucks along with Geoff Courtnall, Sergio Momesso and Robert Dirk. That is when his career really took off as he rattled off 328 points in 366 Vancouver games over the next six seasons. Included was a 5-10-15 performance in the 94 playoffs when the Canucks went to the Stanley Cup finals. Then came two seasons in Phoenix, four in Nashville, 14 games with the Kings, a full campaign with Minnesota and, finally, a half season with the Islanders. All told, 1,137 games, 306 goals, 563 assists and 869 points. Not bad for a guy who was too small! Ronning is a recent and welcome addition to the Canucks Alumni squad. He has moved back to his hometown of Burnaby where he is building a new house.
