Alumni donates to Boys and Girls Club
2009-05-01 : The Canuck Alumni has been able to arrange for 25 new sets of hockey equipment (no skates)for the Boys and Girls Club. The equipment came from the NHL Goals and Dreams. We are going to kick the "Learn to skate/play hockey" program in the fall @ the Planet Ice in Coquitlam. Graham Lee owns the Planet Ice and he has donated the ice time for the club.
The BC Lions/Canuck Alumni are having a fundraiser at a pub in Richmond during the hockey game on May 7th - all the money will go to our charity and then all the proceeds will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club - we hope to raise $5,000 for skates for the kids.
Message from the President
2009-04-01 : It is Spring and the NHL playoffs are here! It has been an exciting hockey season for our local team and on behalf of the Alumni, I want to wish the Canucks team and organization the very best in this year's playoff run. Our Alumni hockey team also had another busy season playing a number of charity games throughout the province. I want to thank all those who have contributed to the team's success and maintained a well respected presence in the community.
As we all know, the homeless issue continues to be a major problem in the Vancouver area. This winter our Alumni was able to partner with an organization called "Hockey for the Homeless" and am pleased to announce we were able to help raise $65,000 which will be directed to the care of Vancouver's homeless community.
At present, our Alumni is working with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Vancouver (VBGC) on a new "hockey program", which will allow several young boys and girls to play "ice" hockey on a regular basis. Bob Murray has been the driving force behind this program, and will be asking for volunteers to help with instructional clinics and assistance in other areas. This is an extremely worthwhile cause, allowing a group of young people who would not otherwise have a chance to play the game they love.
This has been the longest winter (snow) I can remember, but!! the golf season will be here soon. The Alumni again will be busy with a number of charity golf tournaments planned for this summer. Last year, our "Players" tournament, the Cyclone Taylor Golf Classic, changed both format and venue, and was pleased to see over 60 former professional hockey players in attendance. I want to congratulate the organizing committee for a job well done.
The Jake Milford Charity Invitational was held at the Northview Golf and Country Club, and celebrated it's 25th year of existence. The Vancouver Canucks and the organizing committee, led by Karen Christiansen, have done a tremendous job since revamping the tournament two years ago. This year's tournament has again been scheduled to take place at Northview country club on September 16, 2009.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank and extend our appreciation to all our members who have donated their valuable time to ensure the Association continues to grow and remain healthy. Success remains with you, the members, and I sincerely hope the Alumni can rely on your continued support.
Sincerely,
Gerry Sillers,
President

ALUMNI LENDS SUPPORT IN SMITHERS
2009-03-28 : Hosted this time around in the town of Smithers at the Civic Centre, March 28th saw the Vancouver Canucks Alumni once again lace up to join forces with BC Conservation Officers in effort to raise funds for BC Children‟s Hospital and KidSports.
BC Children‟s Hospital has been instrumental in providing treatment and support to sick kidsfrom all over the NorthWest and their families. Kidsports, with its mission statement which reads, "We believe that no kid should be left on the sidelines and all should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sports," provides support to kids and families by removing the financial barrier that impedes the participation of some children in organized sports.
The first period of the game saw the Canucks Alumni up to their usual antics with the ceremonial "pie to the face," after the first goal of the game was scored by the Society of BC Conservation Officers team. Several goals were exchanged by both teams in the first period.
After the 1st period, a 5 minute game between two Tim Horton's Timbit Initiation league hockey players entertained the guests and was also a highlight of the game as one of theTimbit
players slipped a breakaway shot past a sprawling Terry Bingley.
The second period was also filled with more good plays on the ice and more Alumni antics. A Mike MacWilliam goal was called off by one of the refs on a controversial call. On the ensuing penalty shot awarded to MacWilliam, he stick handled a beach ball in and with an incredible spinarama and behind the back shot, rifled a beach ball over goalie Ken Owens' glove hand to restore the Alumni lead.
The third period saw a desperate move by the C.Officers hockey team to get back into the game by handcuffing goalie Terry Bingley's glove hand to the goal post.A barrage of shots followed but the home team could not find a way to get one past the Alumni's net minder. It was a highly entertaining game which ended in a final score of 11-7 in favour of the Alumni.
