Hockey for the homeless

2009-11-17 : NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Wednesday, November 4, 2009 Hockey for the Homeless Tournament Supports Two Local Charities: Vancouver homeless to benefit from funds raised at inaugural event VANCOUVER — Hockey for the Homeless/Hockey pour les sans-abri is pleased to announce its partnership with two local charities dedicated to fighting homelessness. On February 20, Hockey for the Homeless held its inaugural fundraising tournament in Vancouver. The event, which featured 16 former Vancouver Canucks and other NHL alumni playing with 100 members of the business community, raised more than $65,000. The Vancouver organizing committee then allocated the proceeds to specific projects. The partners selected to receive funding for 2009 are the RainCity Housing and Support Society and the Lookout Emergency Aid Society. Both of these well- established organizations operate homeless shelters and transitional and supportive housing in Metro Vancouver. RainCity used its portion of the funds to replace two aging industrial washing machines at its Triage Shelter in the Downtown Eastside. Meanwhile, the Lookout opted to buy a new delivery and outreach vehicle. Negotiations are under way with Hockey for the Homeless sponsor Terasen Gas to provide a natural gas–powered van at reduced cost. “When we began planning the first Vancouver event in the fall of 2008, we had no idea what to expect in terms of fundraising, much less how we would help the community,” says local organizing committee member Hugh Ker. “Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and supporters, the tournament was successful beyond all expectations. As a result, we’ve been able to give significant support to organizations that are working toward ending homelessness in Vancouver.” Hockey for the Homeless (Charitable Business Number 865580146 RR0001) is a volunteer-driven charitable organization launched in 1996. Its mission is to end homelessness in Canada through fund raising, education and partnering with solutions-based outreach groups. Active in Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver, Hockey for the Homeless has raised more than $2 million in support of some 15,000 homeless men, women and children across the country. The next Vancouver tournament will take place in spring 2010 at the University of British Columbia. To learn more, please visit www.hockeyforthehomeless.com.
