The PoCoMo Youth (Project Reach Out)

2008-11-18 : The PoCoMo Youth Services Society with its Project REACH OUT program is a mobile drop-in centre for Youth on the street and the first of it's kind ever in Canada. Project REACH OUT is an innovative service that builds relationships with youth by traveling to areas of the community where at-risk Youth congregate, to connect them with much needed community resources. The program connected with over 4600 youth in 2008. In the same year, the program was able to save 14 young lives in three months from binge drinking. The event was quite unique because it allowed members of POCO community to participate by buying "player spots" which allows them to play hockey with their Canucks heroes. And as would have been predicted the Canucks alumni won the game. In attendance from the Vancouver Alumni were Mark Lake, Rick Amann, Greg Neeld, Jackson Davies, Alec Tidey, Mike MacWilliam, Dan Clark, Wayne Van Dorp, Stu Ostlund, Dave Babych, Terry Bingley, Kirk McLean, Cliff Ronning, Ed Hatoum, BJ MacDonald, Chris Oddleifson, John Craighead, Phil Von Stephanelli, Jeff Bandura and Mike Brown. Coach for the Alumni was RodBrathwaite. Their Assistant Coach was Ernie Doherty. Trainer for the Alumni was Gerry "Slammer" Dean. With its 7:00 p.m. to midnight patrols, 2 evenings a week and one follow-up day, with an average contact of 37 youth a night, Project Reach Out has been successful at reducing violence and vandalism in the area. The Vancouver Canucks Alumni support is highly instrumental to the success of this program in the way they continue to enable the organization to reach more at-risk youth.

Alumni play New West Firefighters

2008-11-14 : On Friday, November 14th, the Alumni played a game at Queens Park Arena in New Westminster, vs. the New West Firefighters. It was the 5th bi-annual charity game, coined as "The Hydrant Cup". The game was very exciting, as a nearly sold out arena cheered on their firefighters and the Canuck legends. The firefighters fought well, but the alumni were just too much, always raising their game when needed, in order to stay ahead by 2 or 3 goals.

The game was played to raise money for the Canucks Alumni Foundation, Queens Park Hospital Foundation and the New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society. The game's organizers worked hard to ensure that the game had a great family atmosphere. Teams of firefighters went out and visited all the schools in the city to promote the game, and the ticket sales for the game were tied in as fundraisers for the local PAC committees in each school.

The game itself had fun activities such as a Frisbee toss for prizes, a 50/50 draw, face painting, and balloon tying. There was also a silent auction, with items such as Canucks jerseys and gear from Justin Morneau and Jeff Francis. Promotion for the game included emphasizing the game as a reunion of sorts of the old New Westminster Bruins, which included Cliff Ronning, Bill Ranford, Mark Lofthouse, as well as Ernie "Punch" McLean as a guest coach for the firefighters. The evening turned out to be a big success, and many people are looking forward to the return of the Canucks alumni again soon.
